I Heard the Owl Call My Name

The news last night reported a great snowy owl in downtown Madison. So it was not entirely a surprise to see it on my walk today. Lovely sunny day again, and I was on the bike path along Wingra heading toward the zoo, between Park St and Fish Hatchery -- not quite as far as the Arboretum.

First I heard the cry, distinctly a bird of prey. So I looked up. It was soaring north, and the shape of the large body and wings was quite distinctive, rounded in flight, the white underside bright against the blue sky. It disappeared in the tops of the neighborhood trees. I heard it again as I approached the construction site at St Marys. The building crane there was on the move, one of its favored roosts, and it complained of this from the top of the nearby hospital building, and disappeared again.
